This would definitely have been exacerbated if I had the larger 10's. The boot, at a snug fit, can be somewhat clunky. If I had gone with the size 10 instead of the 9, I would have spent more money on pads and insoles to give me the secure but comfortable fit I have now. So long as the length of the boot matches, or is slightly longer than your foot (about a quarter inch), the boot should stretch to a comfortable fit. In my experience, the fit was snug, though pretty uncomfortable at certain areas (where the eyelet stitching meets the toe box). For reference, my pair were made in Vietnam. This leather definitely stretches a good amount, though I suppose it could depend on which model you get, where they were made, etc. I also found that I got a lot of wiggle room in the toe box after the stretch, where before I had none. Then I tested out the stretch with the kind of socks I'll normally wear with them. I put on 3 pairs of thick socks, stuffed my foot in the boot, hit the tight / pain areas with a blow dryer for about 15 - 30 minutes, and then pressed down at angles to stretch the leather. The tongue / toe box area is an even tighter fit than the 10 and will definitely need breaking in. My toes are very nearly touching the end of the toe box. Trying on a size 9, I get a more secure, but almost uncomfortably snug fit. This is off to me, as I already lace the boot pretty tight for it to feel secure. After walking around a bit, I noticed some heel slip.
I also have about a half inch / inch of space from toe to end of shoe. The Docs I got are sized 10 and, being my first boot, fit ok, if not a little tight where the tongue meets the toe box. My next dilemma is the classic, "are my Docs fitting right?"
